Redskins vs. Saints: Duds from Monday’s primetime matchup
By Ian Cummings
No. 2 – The entire Redskins secondary
Redskins safety D.J. Swearinger said sometime before the game that his goal was to stop Drew Brees from getting the all-time passing yardage record.
Instead, Brees got the record in the first half.
The Redskins secondary, the self-proclaimed “Flight Marshals”, played absolutely awful under the lights. It was a war of attrition that slowly got out of hand.
The Redskins lost this game in the first half, when defensive penalties on third downs, courtesy of Montae Nicholson and Quinton Dunbar (who was wrongly called), kept crucial Saints’ drives alive. The nail in the coffin was pounded forth at the very beginning of the second half, when rookie TreQuan Smith burned an unprepared Greg Stroman for a demoralizing touchdown that took Washington out of the game, from a mental standpoint.
After allowing under 200 yards per game coming into Monday Night Football, the Redskins’ defensive backs allowed Drew Brees to throw for 363 yards and three touchdowns on just 29 attempts. All of the starters in the secondary got beat at some point, and Norman was benched to start the second half. It didn’t help that the pressure, again, was average at best, but the secondary was the last bastion against Brees’ passing attack. And they failed miserably on Monday night.
