Grading Redskins most controversial moves during roster cuts
Redskins choose Zach Vigil over Martrell Spaight for the final roster
By the end of the preseason, I thought that Vigil had lost a roster spot to Spaight. Instead, the team decided to give Vigil the nod in a move that was both surprising and correct.
Vigil and Spaight are similar players with two key differences. Vigil is much better in coverage than Spaight while Spaight is a better special teamer than Vigil. Because of Spaight’s abilities on special teams, it was anticipated that he would get the job. But instead, the Redskins went with Vigil.
This is smart for one major reason. Spaight has looked lost in coverage every time he’s been on the field in a key role. He hasn’t really shown improvement in this area. While he is a great two-down run stuffer and does really well on special teams, he just can’t be relied on as a spot starter. Vigil, because of his better coverage skills, can be. Thus, keeping Vigil gives the team better depth and more security in case injury woes hit Mason Foster and Zach Brown again.
This was one of the biggest coin-flips in terms of a roster spot, but I ultimately think the Redskins made the right choice. They will get a good grade as a result.
