Redskins: 3 dark horse candidates to make the final roster
1. TE/FB J.P. Holtz
Holtz was a potential roster dark horse before the third preseason game. Now, he may be moving closer to the inside of the roster bubble.
Holtz has been an excellent lead blocker throughout his two games with the team. He had the key block on Samaje Perine‘s 30-yard burst from the second preseason game and also was a factor on many Adrian Peterson runs in the contest against the Broncos. Peterson has done well behind fullbacks before, so there’s a chance that Holtz could make it to serve that role.
The Redskins don’t have anyone like Holtz. Jeremy Sprinkle hasn’t turned into a great blocker yet, and Niles Paul left in free agency. The team needs a TE/FB hybrid like Holtz to help open things up more in the run game. This is especially important now, as their offensive line depth is looking like a major weakness. So, any type of extra blocking is a good thing for the squad.
Holtz may not end up making the 53-man unit, but there’s a very good chance that he will be on the practice squad. He’s emerged as of late and he’s definitely a guy to watch in the final preseason game, as he could really make a splash if he can catch some passes.
