1. Samaje Perine averages 5-plus yards per carry

It’s hard to know exactly how much Perine and Rob Kelley will play in the second preseason game. For that reason, I’m not making any bold predictions about the potential for yardage, as their workloads are too much of an unknown right now. That said, I do expect that Perine will have a good game as he looks to prove himself as a starting option.

Perine has been maligned in the wake of the Derrius Guice injury, but the fact is that he has some talent. He’s not as explosive as Guice, but he has nice vision and a solid frame. If he can learn to run with more power and lower pad level, he should be a solid starter for the team this year. At the very least, he seems primed to improve after an up-and-down rookie season.

Even if Perine doesn’t get a lot of carries, I’m expecting that he will have a chance to put up some good numbers. If Perine can break a couple of long runs, then he should easily be able to exceed 5.0 yards per carry. And if he just grinds out a lot of tough runs, I could see that happening as well. It just seems that Perine needs to have a coming out party before the season and this game against a weaker opponent.

Perine should be closely watched in this game regardless of the results he puts up. That said, I have a lot of faith in him and expect that he will have a great performance as he can sense that his opportunity to prove himself is now.
