Five Redskins position battles to watch in Week 2 of preseason
By Ian Cummings
No. 3 – Fifth Wide Receiver
Battle: Trey Quinn vs. Brian Quick vs. Cam Sims vs. Simmie Cobbs
Maurice Harris truthers out there will be happy to hear that, with the season-ending injury to Robert Davis, Harris appears to be more of a roster lock each day. I’ve needed more convincing on Harris for a while; he does need to be more consistent gaining separation. But he’s had a very strong camp, and thus, he’s pulling away from the pack.
With Harris now entrenched as the team’s No. 4 receiver, there is a four-way battle for the final two spots, as the team will more than likely keep six receivers. Trey Quinn is one of the front-runners; even with an underwhelming preseason debut, he’s done enough in camp to gain the confidence of the coaches. So too has veteran Brian Quick, but behind them, Cam Sims and Simmie Cobbs, two undrafted free agents, have the tools to steal a spot.
In the Redskins’ upcoming battle with the New York Jets, this position will be the host of a fierce competition. As it stands, Quinn and Quick are a step ahead of the two undrafted free agents, but with every good performance, as Sims had last week, the gap gets smaller and smaller. Will Sims and Cobbs strengthen their case on Thursday? Or will Quinn and Quick show why they should remain? The answer eludes for now, but we will have it soon.
