Derrius Guice was always expected to push for the starting role sooner rather than later for the Redskins. However, he has gotten off to an even quicker start than many have anticipated.

While there was always a lot of hype surrounding the second-round pick of the Redskins, Guice has only created more. Between the great relationship he has with the Redskins fans and some of the highlights he put up during the offseason, many were excited to see what he would be able to do on the practice field. And thus far, the results have been very good.

ESPN’s John Keim pointed out that Guice has been performing well through training camp and that he has been displaying the right attitude throughout the first week of training camp.

More from Commanders News

"Running back Derrius Guice has drawn praise from coaches for how he is in the meeting room, with running backs coach Randy Jordan saying he asks questions to get answers — not just to ask them. On the field, Guice worked in pass protection drills and showed his aggressive nature. But the coaches say they want to make sure he doesn’t overcommit and lose leverage on his man. For him it’s about perfecting technique, not want-to."

Guice obviously desires to be great, so that’s already a great sign. Moving forward, he will be able to use that hunger to win more playing time early in his career. Considering that Chris Thompson may not be ready to handle the amount of work he usually does early in the season, Guice may be ready for an expanded role in the passing game.

The rookie class for the Redskins looks really good. And Guice has the potential to be one of the crown jewels of that class.
