3. LB Will Compton

The Redskins unfortunately lost Mason Foster for the season after Week 7. Foster was placed on Injured Reserve, and though he could be activated late in the year, it seems more likely he will not be. As a result, the team is being forced to rely on two backups to play extra snaps and help their team.

The two men are Martrell Spaight and Will Compton. While many had anticipated that Spaight would get a chance to start, given that he had been the one who saw the field when Foster missed the Week 3 battle with the Raiders, Compton actually started last week.

The Redskins know what they have in Compton. He is a veteran linebacker who has been with the team since signing as an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska in 2013. He is a tough player who knows the defense well and is regarded as a leader. His role will probably be in a platoon split with Spaight, but Compton’s performance is going to be very important.

Compton is going to be tasked with helping stop the weak Seattle ground game, but more importantly, he could be helping in coverage against tight ends. Compton is more known for his abilities in coverage than he is for his tackling skills, so if he can help slow down Jimmy Graham and Luke Willson, that would be good news for the Redskins. They have struggled defending tight ends in the past, so perhaps Compton could help in that area.

But if Compton’s tackling issues manifest themselves in this contest, the consequences for the Redskins could be dire. Russell Wilson is good at getting in open space, so if the Seahawks think they can exploit Compton when he’s on the field, they may run more read option plays than normal. Even despite the poor performance of their running backs.
