Previewing the Washington Redskins vs. Green Bay Packers in NFL Preseason Week 2
Redskins offense vs. Packers defense
On the offensive side of the ball, the Redskins are going to be looking for a marked improvement over their first performance. That will start at the quarterback position.
Kirk Cousins is expected to see a bit more playing time than the two series he saw in the opener, but one would imagine that he will still not be in for very long. Thus, the game will be in the hands of Colt McCoy and Nate Sudfeld for a majority of the day.
McCoy is the passer that really needs to improve his performance. McCoy was, simply put, dreadful in his first preseason action. He looked uncomfortable in the pocket, in part because he dealt with a lot of pressure, but he also was guilty of some inaccurate throws. For now, we can chalk that up to rust, and if he picks up his play against Green Bay, that will be a good sign.

In the running game, the team will once again give action to all of their backs, but look for Samaje Perine to once again tote the rock a good amount. Rob Kelley is likely going to be the starter for the Redskins. There’s no doubt about it. But Perine needs the extra reps to continue to develop his abilities. The Packers not particularly strong in the front seven, so getting him some action against backup defensive linemen like former Redskin Ricky Jean-Francois could be a good move for the team.
Still, Kelley will see a good chunk of the early carries when Cousins is on the field. It is imperative that the starting backfield is comfortable together and after a few series, Cousins and Kelley should be in good shape.
The receiving corps should get a little bit of a test from the Packers as well. The top guys, namely Terrelle Pryor and Jamison Crowder, will only see a bit of action early. The real interesting part of this will be the depth battle. Robert Davis will get a chance to test his speed against some of the younger Packers cornerbacks. If he can use his speed to beat them, that may get him closer to securing a spot on the roster.
But of all the things to watch on offense, the most important might be the offensive line. They performed poorly in the preseason opener, and they will have their hands full with the Packers early on in the game. If Mike Daniels and Nick Perry see action, the line will have to slow them down to give their weapons any chance to make positive yards on offense.
