The Washington Redskins appear to still be active in the free agent market. They have reportedly been in contact with a couple of free agents in the past few days, including Bennie Logan.

The early days of the NFL free agent period have been frustrating for the fans of the Washington Redskins. On the first day, the general manager of the team, Scot McCloughan, was officially fired by the team. That day, three star players left the team including two receivers who had each posted 1,000 yards seasons. The Redskins made up for these departures by overpaying for a couple of defensive linemen, but then made amends by signing a solid safety, D.J. Swearinger, and a high upside wide receiver in Terrelle Pryor.

However, as time goes on, it appears that the team is still trying to sign some other players. They have cap space remaining, and could open up even more if they end up trading Kirk Cousins, as he has requested. As long as Bruce Allen is with the Redskins, Cousins will not negotiate a long term deal. That may force Daniel Snyder’s hand and allow for a trade to be made.

Even without copious cap space, the Redskins are still attempting to make a couple of smaller moves. Here are some rumors about who they are currently targeting.

Bennie Logan Could Be An Option

Shortly after the end point of the 2016 NFL season, the Redskins were rumored to have interest in Bennie Logan. The talented run stuffer was coming off of a down year for the divisional rival Eagles, but he still has the ability to function as a strong nose tackle. Had he not been dogged by injuries, he could have demanded a bigger contract and may have been higher on the list of priorities for many franchises.

However, as it stands it appears that Logan is searching to sign a one year deal. That is according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who also reported the Redskins interest as recent as Friday night:

If the Redskins are able to land Logan on a one year deal, that would be an excellent move. Logan would instantly be their top player on the defensive line, and he and new additions Terrell McClain and Stacy McGee should be able to greatly improve the team’s run defense. Granted, the latter two were overpaid but they are still solid run defenders.

Also adding to the benefits would be the fact that the Eagles would miss out on Logan. Poaching a player from a divisional rival often pays off, and the Redskins would strengthen their roster by weakening that of the Eagles. And getting a one year deal would be a huge, no risk, high reward proposition. If that is on that table for Logan, the Redskins must take advantage of it.

Cordarrelle Patterson Met With The Team

The Redskins have already added one receiver this week in Terrelle Pryor, but they could still stand to add some depth. They lost DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon in free agency, so adding a depth player would be a smart move.

More from Commanders Free Agency

Enter Cordarrelle Patterson, who reportedly met with the Redskins over the weekend. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Patterson left the Redskins meeting without a deal and has most recently met with the Raiders.

If Patterson decides that the Redskins are his best option, that could be good news for the team. Patterson is one of the best return men in the league, and he could take over the kickoff duties for the Redskins. He should continue to be one of the top players at that position, and that would take some pressure off of Jamison Crowder.

Elsewhere, Patterson would be a solid fit as a fourth receiver. He could be used as a gadget player and a deep threat. When combined with Crowder, the Redskins could have some interesting packages. The team should try and sign Patterson, provided that his market value is not too expensive. There is a good chance that the Raiders could value him more than the Redskins, so that is a situation to watch.
