4. He can’t stay healthy
Robert Griffin III had one of the greatest rookie seasons a quarterback has ever had and he electrified the league. But even that sensational season was marred by a series of injuries. He had a concussion that year too and he also had a devastating knee injury.
I don’t think how his season ended that year with a torn ACL was his fault and the mishandling of this derailed his development. Ever since then RGIII’s career been disrupted by one injury after another.
Last season it was a dislocated ankle that cost him six games and now this preseason he suffered a concussion that may cause him to miss the start of the regular season. Again, a player can’t be blamed for getting injured as sometimes it’s just plain bad luck.
But a teams’ starting quarterback has to be in the lineup consistently. Even if there were problems with the offensive line, Robert Griffin III still needed to prove that he could stay healthy this season and he got injured before the season even started.
He’s not the only quarterback that’s been hit hard this preseason. I’ve seen highlights of top quarterbacks taking punishing hits this preseason. We saw Kirk Cousins take some hard shots in the Ravens game. It comes with playing quarterback in the NFL.
It’s not his fault he got injured but I can’t blame the Redskins for not wanting to deal with this anymore. Again, If RGIII had actually been a top quarterback I think the Redskins would be more apt to work with him through the injuries.
But with Robert Griffin III we’re talking about a physically gifted but still inconsistent quarterback. When other people’s jobs are on the line, there’s only but so long they can wait. And it seems the Redskins can wait no longer.
