With the new signings at Safety, Cedric Griffin and Brandon Meriweather, the question is posed,” Is this an upgrade at Safety for Washington? Let’s take a look at 2011.

Laron Landry- Shows signs of greatness but cannot stay healthy. Lives in the weight room and has a strong work ethic but he is no good to us if he’s not on the field.

OJ Atogwe- Didn’t look bad but didn’t look that good either. Had 3 interceptions, but I don’t even remember him getting them.

Reed Doughty- Perhaps the most consistent of the three. You know exactly what you are going to get from Reed and he delivers. The only problem is he is not what we need to get the job done. I would keep him around for Special Teams and substitutions but that’s it.

I’ll stop there! Typing that gave me the chills…I believe that these signings give the Redskins a much stronger Safety combo to bolster the defense.

Jan 17, 2010; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton (84) is tackled by Minnesota Vikings cornerback Cedric Griffin (23) after a first down reception during the first quarter of the 2010 NFC divisional playoff game at the Metrodome. The Vikings won 34-3. Mandatory Credit: Bruce Kluckhohn-US PRESSWIRE

Cedric Griffin- Is an Athletic aggressive type player that should provide the services that we wanted to get from Landry. With the exception of 2010, Griffin only missed 2 games and that was in his rookie year in 2006. Landry missed 16 games in the last 3 years, leaving a major hole in the Redskins secondary that was not easy to hide. Also, Griffin is athletic enough to play cornerback. With that type of versatility, the Redskins can disguise some coverages and use Griffin all over the field. Keep in consideration that Griffin signed a 1-year deal so he is playing for a big time contract in 2013. This speaks well for the expected effort we should get out of Griffin.

Sep 25, 2011; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears free safety Brandon Meriweather (31) breaks up a pass intended for Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings (85) in the second half at Soldier Field. The Packers defeated the Bears 27-17. Mandatory Credit: Dennis Wierzbicki-US PRESSWIRE

Brandon Meriweather- Brings more of “The U” swag to Washington. Another Miami ball hawking safety that has been trained to make plays. The former Pro Bowler brings a fresh new look to make the Redskins defense even more dangerous. With the strength of the Redskins pass rush, Meriweather should be able to take advantage of the short field he will have to cover.

Being able to keep the SAME players on the field for the entire year will be a plus for Washington. Injuries have been the biggest issue as to why we aren’t running like a well oiled machine more consistently. So to answer my question,” Should the Redskins feel SAFE?” My answer is yes! What do you think?

The Skins were were burned for long plays and scores last year in their secondary. Should the Redskins pursue a proven safety for depth and competition?

June 1 has relevance to the process because, technically, the tenders must be re-issued on that date. That exercise becomes particularly relevant to Rams safetyO.J. Atogwe.

Atogwe was a franchise player in 2009. To avoid a requirement that he be tendered an offer worth at least 110 percent of his franchise-player salary from last season, the Rams tendered him at the lowest possible level, which gave them only a right to match any other offer he received. As of June 1, the re-issued tender must be the greater of the previous tender or 110 percent of the prior year’s salary. Thus, in order to retain exclusive rights to Atogwe, the Rams will have to increase Atogwe’s take from a non-guaranteed offer of $1.226 million to a guaranteed (if signed) tender worth nearly $7 million.

According to NFLLabor.com, Atogwe and 36 other restricted free agents have not officially signed their tender offers (one of them, Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh) reportedly has accepted his. Most of them likely will be re-issued a tender on June 1. It’s unlikely that the Rams will do so with Atogwe. If they don’t, he’ll be free to sign with any other team.

The next key date comes on June 15, when the tender can be reduced to 110 percent of the player’s 2009 salary, a development that would dramatically reduce the 2010 salaries for some of the unsigned restricted free agents.

In four years, Schweigert has accumulated 316 tackles and 4 interceptions. This is hardly anything to get too excited about, but he’ll add depth to a position that needs it. Sean Taylor‘s death was a terrible blow on so many levels, and nobody is going to ask people to fill his shoes, but someone has to start now that he’s gone. It’s always good to have more options.
