This offseason has been unlike any other in recent memory. “Lockout”, “stay”, “injunction”- these phrases are being used as commonly as “OTA”, “Mandatory” and “chemistry” were just a year ago at this time. Teams are suffering at the hands of owners and players that cannot reach a common ground.

As a fan, I wonder how players that cannot practice their profession manage to kill time during such a work stoppage? There are, of course, the obvious answers such as working out, training with professionals, hanging out with family members etc. For a select few Redskins players, there’s an app for their free time.

Amidst the confusion and uncertainty of the labor talks between the League and the Player’s Union, Reggie Jones quietly prepares to make his debut in the Burgundy and Gold.

Hailing from Seattle, Jones faced a tough decision. As a member of the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints Practice Squad, he decided to accept an offer from the Washington Redskins and finish off the season on the team’s active roster. This meant he would not be a part of the Saints team that would play in the Wild Card Round versus the Seattle Seahawks, and inevitably lose.

Jones told Matt Terl, the Redskins Blog:

“It was tough,” he told me shortly after he arrived here. “Should I stay in New Orleans, be comfortable, ride through the playoffs, maybe get another Super Bowl Ring? You know, have the chance to be known as two-time champion Reggie Jones. Or I could go to a team that wants to play me and have an opportunity to turn the program around. To help turn a program around.”

Now, Jones looks to make his mark on a Redskins team that already has a crowded defensive backfield, including Pro-Bowler DeAngelo Hall, Carlos Rogers and Philip Buchanan. Last night on Backfield Radio, a local Washington, D.C. web-based radio show, Jones had his first opportunity to speak to the fans in his first live interview since joining the team. (more…)
