This is part two of Riggo’s Rag’s interview with ESPN anchor, Maryland native, and devout Redskins fan Bram Weinstein. In part I, Bram spoke about his introduction to the Redskins and the glory days of the 80′s. This is the second part of that interview. Bram now speaks on the current status of the Redskins as a team and what lies ahead for our beloved sons of Washington. Enjoy!

RR – Okay, well I guess this is where we make the jump to now- a time the younger generation will have a little more knowledge of.

Neither Beck nor Rex will be the answer in 2012 (Win McNamee/Getty Images)

RR – Did Shanahan do the right thing in benching Rex for Beck?

BW – I think he had to give Beck his shot. Now that said, the week he got in was after Cooley was hurt, I think Moss was out. They’d lost their center and Trent Williams was hurt. Not exactly a full deck and it showed.

BW – His real mistake was “staking his reputation” on these two. They needed a QB and didn’t get a QB in a division chock full on all-world ones. That same mistake won’t be replicated. Someone is coming in either by free agency, trade or the draft.

RR – Some were saying that Shanny only said that as a confidence boost. Like he does now when he’ll “fully back” a player and later say ” you gotta build up a guys confidence.”

BW – He didn’t have to go that far. Those are the quotes that come back to haunt you. (more…)

The Washington Redskins will look to have a stellar draft this year after an impressive draft last year. All problems cannot and probably will not be solved in April, so the Redskins will have to begin adding weapons in March. Washington will likely be well under the cap and have room to make some key signings. Let’s take a look at some realistic options and a few not-so-realistic.

Washington spent the bulk of the focus last year on solidifying a defense that was ranked 31st. Last year the defense and specifically the front seven, has made strides in the right direction. This year the focus will be on the other side of the ball. The Redskins lack anybody on offense that absolutely puts fear in the hearts of an opposing team. They don’t have anybody, right now, that defenses have to game plan for (except for the guaranteed two turnovers by Rex Grossman). I believe that they will target several key players in free agency, so long as they are young enough and hungry enough. Here’s a list of targets (in no particular order) and what they could bring to the Redskins.

1. Marques Colston – Wide Receiver

Colston averages over 1,000 yards per season through his six-year career. He stands at 6′ 4″ 225 lbs and has proven to be a hard worker by amassing 80 receptions for 1,143 yards despite only starting seven of the 14 games he played in this regular season. Could he possibly be a product of his system and quarterback in New Orleans? Yes. Could he also just be that good? Yes. The Redskins have a potential threat developing in Leonard Hankerson, but they don’t know much yet. Colston would provide size and speed and possibly open up the underneath throws to Fred Davis and the slot receivers. There’s one more good thing about Colston; he’s only 28 years old. (more…)

The Redskins have officially completed another disappointing season, and all eyes are set towards April. Draft Day promises to be a crazy one for many teams, especially the Washington Redskins. Without sacrificing players and/or future draft picks, the Redskins will be selecting 6th overall. With the subtraction of USC QB Matt Barkley, only two elite quarterbacks are left, and the ‘Skins seem to be too far off to get either. Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck are both projected to go before the Redskins get a chance, bringing up another problem in D.C.

Should they go after a mediocre signal-caller like Landry Jones or Ryan Tannehill? Or should they try for a free-agent, possibly a back-up who just torched a play-off team?

I’m leaning towards the second option, and who could that person be? That person is former 7th rounder Matt Flynn, a QB out of LSU who hasn’t seen much sunlight due to the fact he backs up Aaron Rodgers. On New Year’s Day, he stepped in for a resting Rodgers, and looked like an elite himself. The former college National Champion broke two Packer records by throwing for 480 yards with 6 touchdowns, a feat that caught the eye of the entire NFL. The Redskins have to be drooling over this possibility, especially since they would be able to use their 6th overall pick on someone else they need, like Justin Blackmon, or an O-lineman. Flynn would fit in perfectly with the Washington offense, one reason being since most of the focus will be on the powerhouse of a running back trio they will have. Second year player Leonard Hankerson will be ready to go, and he sure looks promising, and the thought of Blackmon along with him sounds even better. This would give Flynn 2 star receivers, on top of Santana Moss and Fred Davis.

I honestly can’t think of a better option for the Redskins, and hopefully the staff has a similar idea. Bottom line is, we need a franchise QB, and one is with-in reach. It is up to Bruce Allen and the Shanahans to bring him in. Stay tuned in the coming months as I dig deeper into Draft Day possibilities.
