Neither team did much to be proud of. The Redskins managed to get 3 points and at the end of the half, after about fifteen minutes of Refs standing around conferring over a fairly meaningless call, the Redskins were in position to make a 39 yard field goal attempt. Unfortunately Suisham missed his first field goal of the year, and it would come back to haunt them.

In the second half, the Redskins managed a second field goal and not much else happened. In the final minutes, the Redskins, leading 6-0, attempted a 50 yard field goal and missed. You could feel momentum slipping away as the Cowboys players got charged up. Suddenly the inept Cowboys offensive game became unstoppable as Romo completed pass after pass in the waning minutes of the 4th quarter. With such good field position, they marched right down the field and threw a touchdown to Patrick Crayton, leaving a little over two minutes left in the game.

A few plays later Jason Campbell, in the oh-so-familiar catchup mode with time running out, threw a pick and it was all over. The Redskins played just well enough to make it look like they could pull out a win, and then they self destructed. Credit to the Defense for holding the Cowboys to 7 points, though they were one stop away from finishing the game. The offense worked in occasional spurts but lacked consistency, which is nothing new for this team.

To make matters worse, injuries hit the team hard. Ladell Betts was injured early in the 1st quarter and did not return. Early reports suggest a torn MCL, which would put him out for the rest of the season. Chad Rinehart has a broken fibula. Clinton Portis has already been ruled out for next week.

Should the Redskins have won? Probably. They outplayed the Cowboys for most of the game. However it’s the Redskins fault for not finishing. Either of two field goal attempts would have made it a two-score game and would have spelled victory, but the Redskins couldn’t get points on the board. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that some aspect of the stadium (noise, wind patterns, etc) had some factor in Suisham’s missed attempts as he has been rock solid all year. It’s also worth noting that the Cowboys failed a very manageable field goal in the first half.

None of us should have been surprised with this ending. Tony Romo has a few games every season where he plays horribly and then still manages to come back and pull out an ugly win. And Jason Campbell is brilliant at doing the exact opposite. Once the Redskins left it to a one-score game, they were in trouble.

The Washington Redskins signed cornerback Justin Tryon, a fourth round pick, to a four year contract. Tryon has good speed and cover abilities but he’s a little short and may have problems covering some of the larger NFL wide receivers. We’ve had some success with undersized cornerbacks before, so let’s hope it works out. Like his teammate Fred Smoot, he’s known to have a mouth and enjoys trash talking.

We may end up needing him, since Carlos Rogers is coming off major reconstructive surgery to repair torn ligaments late last season. There’s a decent chance he could start off the season on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform list. Rogers never quite lived up to expectations, but has been a part of some top-ranked Gregg Williams defenses and his absence could pose a problem for us.

In other injury news, Rocky McIntosh is also coming off of season-ending knee surgery but the Washington post reports that he is scheduled to be medically cleared to play on June 19th. This is, of course, great news since Rocky was really having a breakout year before his injury.

Finally, the Redskins signed their seventh round pick, safety Chris Horton. With Horton and Tryon signed, we still have eight players left to sign. Washington’s front office is going to start negotiations with their three second-round picks next week.
