Do you remember Clinton Portis’ first carry as a Redskin? Because I do.

That 60+ yard cut-back run did more than put a handsome six points on the board, it gave Redskins nation hope that a first-class rusher had finally arrived in Washington. That one run acted like a virtual hangover cure for the majority of us who were waiting for the next Stephen Davis to step in and lead the Redskins’ run game.

Thankfully it translated into more than just a “flash in the pan” performance from Portis. Over the course of six seasons in Washington, Clinton Portis was able to dial in four 1,000+ yard seasons. One would think that had he not been injured in 2006 he would have been able to put together five consecutive 1,000 yard seasons.

I’d be amiss if I didn’t also mention what he was able to deliver off the field, as well. The wigs, the glasses, the hats- the multiple personalities. What was at first cumbersome for many in the Redskins locker room to accept became one of the main-stays of ‘Skins post-game interviews.

I always thought it was like Dennis Rodman without, well, all the weirdness.

Portis’ last two seasons in DC were nothing if not forgettable, though. Portis, who for years was an explosive, low to the ground force looked tired. The burst wasn’t there and often times it seemed that he folded forward after minimal contact.

Whatever fire had burned in Portis only a few seasons prior had visibly dwindled in 2009/2010. There was no question in this writer’s mind that it was time for a change. It was more than just the rampant injuries that seem to pop up in quick succession, C.P. just seemed gassed; Exhausted by the game.

So, now at age 30, Portis claims to be rejuvenated and ready for another shot at the NFL. It’s timely, given that Randy Moss and Terrell Owens have both launched their comeback campaigns over the last few months.

Can Portis compete? Has he had ample time to rehab and reignite his desire to lay it on the line?

There’s no way to know right now. That is, unless someone is willing to give him a shot. I’m sure the Allen Wranglers would clear a roster spot for him in a heartbeat. God knows T.O. could use some company down in Texas.

I’ve got a sneaking suspicion the Redskins aren’t in the running. Shanahan is looking to field one of the younger Redskins’ line-ups that we’ve seen in recent years. Roy Helu is now the featured runner in Kyle Shanahan’s offense; He proved as much this past year.

Will Portis land somewhere? It’s tough for a running back to play at a high level once they cross the threshold into the 30′s. However, if he is healthy, Portis could see limited action as a change of pace guy. I doubt we’ll see him in the burgundy and gold again, though.

Here’s wishing you good luck, C.P. May the comeback road be kinder to you than it was to Terrell Owens.
