People have been hearing a multitude of things regarding the lockout and if it is once again lifted. This time for good. We have heard that owners would consider “shutting down” the league in the event the final decision is not in there favor.

That is what we have heard, but this is what ESPN’s Chris Mortenson reports:

“As prominent NFL man says, please ignore concept being floated that NFL could shut down business if lockout lifted,” Mortensen writes on Twitter. “Not a chance, he says.” Mortensen later dismissed Goodell’s failure to take the option off the table by saying without elaboration, “I wouldn’t use it as a barometer of what’s real here.”

While anything may be possible, we may be able to at least rule out that idea.

Okay, so there are plenty of rehashings of Chris Mortenson’s report that Rex Grossman could start against Dallas. Like any juicy piece of speculation around the Redskins, this little diddy has gotten much more air time than it deserves. Donovan McNabb is healthy. Shanahan needs to see McNabb get the ball into the end zone more frequently in order to make the best determination as to whether or not he’ll be the Redskins’ quarterback next year. So, why on earth would he start Grossman?

So what if Grossman took a few extra practice reps? I wouldn’t be suprised to see him get in a game or two to see how he performs coming off the bench. After all, in Ashburn, this is the season for tryouts. He’s been evaluated on how he’s practiced, and he might get a chance to show what he can do in a game. My advice to Rex – don’t get excited young grasshopper.

My point here is that it’s one thing to let Grossman play some so Papa Shanny can better evaluate him. It would be another thing entirely to start him and tick McNabb off, without achieving any other objective whatsover. Stranger things have happened, of course. I just don’t see this being one of them, especially with that two-minutes-to-go benching in Detroit still in everyone’s memory.

No doubt the partnership of Shanahan & Son will do as it pleases. Until it does, this just isn’t worth speculating over. Frankly, the whole topic feels a lot more like ESPN wanting to be quoted than ESPN informing its audience of a looming development.

Go Skins!
