Training camp and the preseason offer unique opportunities for players that might not otherwise see playing time. Those that truly benefit for this are undrafted and lower-round drafted players. Tonight will offer a chance for some to shine and some to crumble, under the spotlight. Here’s a list of players to watch and why.

July 26, 2012; Ashburn, VA, USA; Washington Redskins wide receiver Brandon Banks (16) catches the ball during the first day of Redskins 2012 training camp at Redskins Park. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

1. Brandon Banks (WR/KR)

Banks has to do well on offense and special teams or he has to take a kick/punt to the house. Some people feel as though he is a lock to make this team, but if Banks struggles or even muffs a kick, he could be on the chopping block in a hurry. Right now the Redskins are looking at several different receivers that could possibly take back kicks, including a former receiver in Niles Paul. Banks likely cannot play himself out of roster contention tonight, but he could secure a spot within the final 53 if he does extremely well.

July 30, 2012; Ashburn, VA, USA; Washington Redskins defensive back Reed Doughty (37) runs onto the field prior to Redskins training camp at Redskins Park. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

2. Reed Doughty (S)

The Buffalo Bills are not the Detroit Lions. The Bills have a great running back coming off of an injury and one true threat at receiver. Brandon Meriweather and Madieu Williams are the projected starters tonight, meaning Doughty is at-best a backup (surprise). Jordan Bernstine, DeJon Gomes, Tanard Jackson and Doughty will be fighting for two spots. If Doughty can play well tonight and maybe even make a key play, he could secure his spot as a backup as the incumbent.

July 27, 2012; Ashburn, VA, USA; Washington Redskins offensive guard Maurice Hurt (79) and guard Adam Gettis (73) participate in drills during Redskins training camp at Redskins Park. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

3. Adam Gettis (G)

Gettis was “expected to compete for time at backup guard and center as a rookie”, by the Washington Post Insider. Gettis has a huge opportunity here as a starter. Robert Griffin III is expected to go for anywhere from 10-20 plays, but it could be more. Gettis will have an opportunity to show Mike and Kyle that he is capable. Gettis was the Redskins 5th round pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

All three of these players have the potentail to make or break their roster spot tonight. Stay tuned to Riggo’s Rag and follow us on twitter for updates and commentary during the game.

The NFL released their 2012 preseason schedule today and the Washington Redskins are going to be facing some familiar foes. Here’s a look at their four opponents and what to look for in each game.

Week 1 – (August 9-11) @ Buffalo Bills

Oct 30, 2011; Toronto, ON, Canada; Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (14) gets hit by Washington Redskins inside linebacker London Fletcher (59) and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo (98) after throwing a pass during the second quarter at the Rogers Centre. Mandatory Credit: Luc Leclerc-US PRESSWIRE

The Redskins will have a rematch of last year’s terrible showing in Toronto. This being the first preseason game, could feature Rex Grossman for an initial quarter or so. The likely first overall pick by the Redskins, Robert Griffin III, should see some playing time as well. This game will be surrounded by an immense amount of hype for the simple fact that Griffin (or Luck) will see the field for the very first time.

Week 2 – (August 17-18) @ Chicago Bears

Oct. 24, 2010; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte (22) runs with the ball while Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall (23) defends during a game at Soldier Field. The Redskins defeated the Bears 17-14. Mandatory Credit: Dennis Wierzbicki-US PRESSWIRE

The Skins head over to Chicago and take on the Bears in their second preseason contest. This game will likely feature Bears Running Back Matt Forte and Quarterback Jay Cutler in limited action. The Redskins defense will face a solid test for their second straight week.

Week 3 – (August 24-25) v. Indianapolis Colts

Aug 19, 2011; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning (right) talks with Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan after the preseason game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Washington defeated Indianapolis 16-3. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

This matchup could potentially feature the number one and number two overall picks facing each other at quarterback. The Colts are all but locked into Stanford Quarterback Andrew Luck and the Redskins seemingly have their guy in Baylor QB Robert Griffin III. The third preseason game is also traditionally known as the “dress rehearsal” for the regular season. This contest could feature both premier talents for well over a half of football. Redskins will also get to test out new receiver Pierre Garcon against his former team. The matchup has the potential to be a sellout for a fan base that is already clamoring for their new star quarterback.

Week 4 – (August 30-31) v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Sep 1, 2011; Hyattsville, MD, USA; Washington Redskins running back Evan Royster (25) follows blocks from guard Kory Lichtensteiger (78) and tight end Logan Paulsen (82) during the first half against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FedEX Field. Mandatory Credit: Brad Mills-US PRESSWIRE

The fourth and final preseason matchup will feature the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the second straight preseason. This will likely be a “throw away game” for starters and a final shot for roster hopefuls to make the 53-man active roster.

All four games will be featured locally on CSN Washington and NBC 4. Look for the matchup between Luck and Griffin in week three to be moved to primetime, should the pieces fall in place. This preseason will likely draw much attention to the Redskins nationally. The preseason lineup will be featured in the navigation bar of Riggo’s Rag along with the rest of the offseason schedule.
