1st Overall Selection – Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Standford

- It’s safe to say that with Jim Irsay announcing the Colts will take Luck, that well, they will. Peyton will be looking for a new home in all likelihood.

- The Redskins fans and media have been toying with ideas such as Matt Flynn or Peyton Manning through free agency. Discussing the Shanaplan

As all of us anxious football fans wait around to see whether our beloved teams will actually see the field next season the one thing that seems to keep us going is the (enter buzz word here) NFL Draft.  From the day our team’s season is finished, whether it is 6 weeks into the season or the Monday after the Super Bowl, we ponder, predict, and analyze, what our team needs to do in next year’s draft.  Draft “experts” do the same, and with the combine and pro-days galore the NFL draft becomes the NYSE, where some players rise to the top of draft boards from obscurity while others see their stock plummet to disheartening lows.   Every year there are great picks, and there are terrible picks, and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has made plenty of each in his day.  Currently the Redskins hold the 10th and 41st picks, with needs across the board.  Let’s take a look back at the history of Coach Shanahan’s early round selections and figure out which positions and players the Redskins should pick, based on the past.

In 14 drafts, with 12 first round picks and  15 second round picks coach Shanahan has picked 5 LBs, 6 DBs, 2 RBs, 1 QB, 1 TE, 5 DEs, 4WRs, 3 OL.

]]> Every year each and every NFL team has players that rise from relative obscurity to become significant contributers.  Whether it is from the bench, the practice squad, or because of a second chance, the Redskins will have players who may have had insignificant roles in 2010, make an impact in 2011.  Last year players like Anthony Armstrong at WR, Lorenzo Alexander at OLB, and Ryan Torain at RB come to mind.   This year their will inevitably be a  new crop of players who make strides to become important pieces of this team and these are a few of the candidates.

    Jeremy Jarmon

    Jeremy Jarmon has the potential to be a significant improvement to the D-line

    Jarmon was basically our third round pick in last year’s draft after we forfeited it to get him in the third round of the supplemental draft in 2009.  It blows my mind that Vinny Cerrato and Jim Zorn could be so boneheaded to spend a third round pick in the supplemental draft but hey, it’s not the only time they blew my mind with stupidity.  The fact of the matter is that they picked Jarmon for a reason, and while they probably gave up too much for him, he can play.  Through his first two years he has experienced a season ending knee injury, a coaching staff telling him to lose weight to be a line backer, and then gain it all back to become a 3-4 end.  At 6-3, 295, he has the size to play end in Haslett’s 3-4 scheme and if healthy, provides an injection of youth and an improvement to a D-line of which no member contributed more than 2.5 sacks last year.  If we don’t draft a DE with our first pick in the draft, Jarmon should be starting and should have a chance to break out in 2011.
