Yes, it is a bit evident that Robert Griffin III is providing Redskin fans everything that they had hoped for. His 20 of 28 performance, with 258 yards passing, 2 touchdowns, and a quarterback rating of 108.8 further cemented his status as the most valuable player on the team, maybe even the league, last week. Each week it seems as though Griffin is making his own “top ten” highlight video with each ensuing drive. His jaw-dropping performances have let Redskin and football enthusiasts forget though the impact Alfred Morris has made this season.

As a rookie, leading this offense’s backfield, Morris has accumulated 658 yards rushing over the course of 7 games with 5 touchdowns. He is currently averaging 94 yards per game and a 4.8-yard per carry average. The twenty-three year old out of Florida Atlantic has been one of the fantasy football steals of the year and has provided Mike Shanahan with a solid option at the running back position. Before the season began, most thought the running back battle was between Roy Helu and Tim Hightower, but after the preseason Shanahan proved why no running back is safe in his system, cutting Hightower. Helu’s injury woes have plagued him in his sophomore season, opening the door for Morris who has shined alongside Griffin as one of its most efficient contributors.

His 22 carries for 120 yards on Sunday vs. the Giants was the third time this year he has surpassed the 100-yard mark in a game. As each week passes, due to RG3’s excessive highlight reels, Morris silently puts up numbers that go unmentioned. Check the stats folks, Morris only trails Arian Foster in the league for most rushing yards as of week 7. He also averages 19.7 carries per game, which indicates the amount of trust the coaching staff puts into him to provide a solid balance to their offense.

Morris does not carry flash, fire, or electricity like Griffin does, that is not Morris’s game. What he does carry is toughness and physique, along with a powerful running style that is only catching the eye of opposing defenses as of now. Griffin and Morris deserve to be looked at as a tandem like Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith. And don’t jump overboard with that statement I just made. I am not saying they are anything like that tandem, but both as rookies are leading this Redskins offense and stockpiling gaudy numbers week in and week out, yet Griffin seems to be the only one that’s being talked about. Am I the only one who sees the significance in two rookies leading one of the best offenses in football?

If Morris carries the same progression as RG3, this team has a bright future that stretches way beyond 2012.

Well, I don’t want to say I told you so, but… and as it remains to be seen whether Robert Griffin III will play on Sunday vs. the Vikings let’s remind all Redskin fans that Kirk Cousins is no Curtis Painter as the second option. Late in the third quarter when RG3 went out of the game, Cousins responded in his NFL debut by connecting with Santana Moss for a 77-yard touchdown pass, keeping the Redskins in the game throughout. Although he will be remembered for his two late interceptions in the 4th quarter while trying to tie the score, Cousins showed that the Skins are not just a one dimensional, rely on RG3, team. The fourth round product out of Michigan State raised some eyebrows across the league during the preseason when he turned in performances like the one in their contest against the Chicago Bears, in which he went 18 of 23 for 264 yards with 3 touchdowns, while playing the entire second half. In the final preseason game as well, Cousins impressed by throwing for 222 yards and completing 15 of 27 passes.

Now obviously, Cousins is still a back up, still not Robert Griffin, but Cousins did cement himself in the preseason as a sure handed option as a second string quarterback. Let’s also remember that Cousins was thrown into a game with most likely little preparation during the week. His numbers, 5 of 9 for 111 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions are not any reason to feel any real fear. Griffin’s mild concussion will keep him out at most one game, and if Cousins is the starter this week the Redskins still have a very formidable shot at winning. Yes there will be some growing pains, but that is the case with every rookie quarterback. Well at least RG3, who has proved to be the one mere exception so far this year, emphasis on the so far.

Basically, it’s this. With the Kirk Cousins, the Redskins have a quarterback who can manage and initiate the offense, and can provide a sufficient enough option at quarterback for them to have a chance at winning this Sunday.

Case closed.

The 2012 season had a different kind of anticipation surrounding it. Rather than blindfolded hope, there was actual reason to be optimistic. Now four weeks into the season, it is evident that the reason for optimism is completely justified. With the addition of Robert Griffin III, it has turned the tides for this franchise that has been victimized for the entire century. Right now, sitting here, a perfectly valid argument could be given that the Redskins could be 4-0.

Game after game Griffin continues to satisfy (to say the least) the organization and its fans, clearly showing why it was the right decision by the executives to move up to the number 2 spot in the draft for him. Last week RG3 showed why no moment or challenge is too large of an obstacle. With 1:42 left in the 4th quarter and trailing 22-21 to the Buccaneers, Griffin master pieced a 66 yard drive that set up a game winning Billy Cundiff field goal. His stats for the game as whole included 26-35 for 324 yards with a 102.4 quarterback rating. Nothing that indicates he is just a rookie in the NFL.

Griffin afterwards described his first game winning drive in the NFL with the word fun. And fun can maybe be the word to define the team this year. Being a Redskin has been a frustrating time for quite a while, but with the strides that continue to be made and the competitiveness the team has showed, it can be said without question that this brand of football being played is fun. For the fans especially, the new dimension that RG3 adds, which includes running, passing, and the intelligence of a seasoned veteran, makes for real reason to expect greater things as the season progresses.

Coming up the Redskins will face the Atlanta Falcons and their similar yet more enhanced high-octane attack. The Falcons are arguably one of the best teams in the league right now so this will be the perfect type of test for the Redskins to see where they are as a team, and to solidify that we are not overreacting as viewers. But to mention again, with this team this year, it is not about hoping for a good performance. Right now the team has showed reason to be optimistic and to feel like there is a real fighting chance to win week after week. RG3 is the reason for that, and if his leadership and play can ignite the whole team to play at levels they never knew they were capable of, perfect. The defense still remains a question, but as long as RG3 is leading their offense, the Redskins brand of football will continue to be fun to watch.
