The Washington Redskins made their final selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. It was Auburn defensive back Joshua Holsey.

With their tenth and final pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins were able to take a player to develop along with their defense. They opted to add Auburn cornerback Joshua Holsey to their roster. Holsey was a red-shirt senior for Auburn, and he offers experience and potential at nickelback.

Holsey only stands at about 5-foot-9 which will limit his potential at the next level. The only position that he can realistically play in nickelback, but he should be able a nice developmental prospect. The Redskins showed little faith in Dashaun Phillips last season, while Kendall Fuller’s most natural fit is on the outside.

Holsey is going to be hard pressed to make the Redskins roster. The team already has Josh Norman, Bashaud Breeland, rookie Fabian Moreau, Quinton Dunbar,  and the aforementioned duo at the position. Holsey will have to prove his value as a No. 6 corner on special teams and show an ability to play in the slot. If he can do that, he may be able to beat out Phillips for the No. 6 corner position on the roster.

Given that this is the final pick in the team’s draft, this is a fine selection. In the worst case scenario, Holsey does not make the final roster and can spend a year competing on the team’s practice squad. Best case, the Redskins may have found a diamond in the rough. One thing is certain. The Redskins definitely were able to upgrade their defense, and particularly their secondary, during the 2017 NFL Draft.
