The Washington Redskins have elected to add a cornerback to help defend against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Dashaun Phillips will be the man.

A couple of weeks ago, the Washington Redskins elected to release Dashaun Phillips from their active roster to add some depth at other positions. Now, it appears that they will be adding him back for their Week 13 matchup. To make room for him, the team released backup tackle Blaine Clausell with the return of Trent Williams looming. The team also waived safety David Bruton from their injured reserve list, which came as somewhat of a surprise. The news broke via the team’s Twitter account.

In the short term, Phillips will provide depth at the cornerback position, and it seems likely that the Redskins will dress him on Sunday. The Cardinals run a lot of multiple receiver sets, so it is important for teams to have many cornerbacks to cover their talented players. They Redskins will be carrying six at the position with Phillips on the roster, so they will have plenty of quality depth. That will give them an advantage against the Cardinals receivers.

It also benefits the team that Phillips is familiar with the team’s scheme. He has been with the Redskins since the beginning of the season, and he did make three starts at the nickel position very early on. Phillips should be able to play at least a bit on Sunday and make Joe Barry’s job at little bit easier.

The team will not lose much by getting rid of Clausell. He had been a healthy scratch for all three games that he was on the active roster, and he was mostly just there for depth purposes. Williams is coming back soon which will push Ty Nsekhe back into a backup role. That makes Clausell completely expendable. Perhaps he will land back on the team’s practice squad.

The most surprising move of the day was the fact that the Redskins elected to waive David Bruton. Bruton had been a starter at safety for four games to begin the season. Though he did not play all too well, I would have thought that they would keep him around for another year. He was on a reasonable contract and could have been a quality backup safety. Maybe they have a plan to add some extra talent in the draft, or perhaps Bruton felt healthy enough to request a release from the injured reserve.

Regardless of what happens, it appears that the Redskins will be ready to go for Sunday’s game. They are in good shape moving forward from a depth perspective and they should have some roster flexibility moving forward.
