Josh Doctson has been hurt for almost all of his Washington Redskins career. It is time for them to put him on injured reserve.

The Washington Redskins may have won this week, but they did get some bad news on Monday. It was reported the Jay Gruden said rookie wide receiver, Josh Doctson, would not return to the practice field this week. The news came via the official Twitter account for the team.

Because of this fact and some others, the Redskins would be best served to put Doctson on the injured reserve.

Doctson has been hampered by an Achilles injury since training camp. It caused him to miss all of the preseason before he was activated for the first two games on the 2016 season. Doctson recorded one catch in each of those contests and has 66 total yards for the year. However, when he was on the field he did not look to have his full explosiveness. He looked a little slower than he should have been and that is why he has sat out the last four games.

Since Doctson, has been out of the lineup, the Redskins have gone 4-0. Now, I am not saying that Doctson is the reason that the Redskins lost their first two games. That could not be further from the truth. However, what they have proven over the last few weeks is that they do not need him to win games. Having him is a nice luxury, but it is not critical for the success of the team. For this reason alone, the team should definitely consider sitting him for the rest of the year.

Jay Gruden seems to think that giving Doctson a couple of extra weeks to recover will help them to further evaluate the most effective option. CSN’s JP Finlay offered up this tweet to showcase Gruden’s thought process.

Though holding on to Doctson could pay dividends this season, the team needs to think about him more in the long term. Frankly, they do not need him to have success this season. They should make sure that they have him healthy for the 2017 season at least. If they do not put him on IR, then they are continually risking his health week in and week out.

Perhaps waiting until the Week 9 bye will prove to be the correct decision. Maybe he will make significant progress in the next two weeks. I still have my doubts. The team could use the extra roster spot in the near future, and getting it from moving Doctson would make sense. For now, this is just a wait and see situation for the team.
