Redskins Final Roster Battles – Linebacker
Inside: Will Compton vs. Adam Hayward vs. Akeem Jordan vs. Darryl Sharpton
Outside: Everett Brown vs. Gabe Miller
One thing the Washington Redskins lacked last season was depth at the linebacker positions. Especially at inside linebacker where there wasn’t much quality depth behind starters Perry Riley and London Fletcher. Especially with Keenan Robinson out injured for most of 2013.But in the offseason the Redskins ensured there would plenty of competition on the inside. They signed free agents Adam Hayward, Akeem Jordan, and Darryl Sharpton. All of whom have experience as starters at inside linebacker and are still in the primes of their careers.
Will Compton doesn’t have the experience of the others but he seems to have developed well over the course of the offseason and has a good shot to make the team. Compton will need to finish strong though. Hayward was brought in to upgrade the special teams, so I think his spot is secured.
Sharpton has been injured the past few games but still has a chance as does Akeem Jordan who has been solid in the preseason. But this is what the Redskins wanted. To make it hard to choose between some good football players and increase depth at the position.
They have also done this at outside linebacker as starters Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan have looked good in the preseason and rookie Trent Murphy has fit in well so far. Now they need at least one more. Rob Jackson was cut, so it comes down to Gabe Miller and Everett Brown.
I’ve been impressed with both of the these players in the preseason. Brown seems to be the better pass rusher of the two, but Miller may be the better against the run and in coverage. However, pass rushing may be the determining factor. Whichever one performs the best against the Bucs may be the one who wins the job.
