Here we go again. Analysts and pundits alike coming out and insinuating that Washington Redskins backup quarterback Kirk Cousins should start over Robert Griffin III. Saying how much better Cousins looks in the preseason than RGIII. We’ve heard this before and as long as Cousins is around we’ll continue to hear it. Because we all know, no one is more popular on the team than the backup quarterback. But do the Redskins have a quarterback controversy? No they don’t. Not at all. Head coach Jay Gruden has stated repeatedly that RGIII Is the starter. While Cousins has looked good in the preseason, there’s no need to jump to conclusions right now about anything. Gruden has seem both in practice extensively and if there was anything that would lead him to believe that Cousins was competing to start then he’d say so.
But the fact is Cousins has done all of his damage in the preseason against other backups. He hasn’t played against starters in the preseason and some of the players he went against on the Ravens last night won’t be in the NFL in another week or so. So while it’s good to see Cousins performing well, there’s no guarantee he would be against first string players.
Unlike Griffin, there was no Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil or Haloti Ngata coming after Kirk Cousins last night so he should have looked good. We saw Cousins start three games last season and with the exception of a solid game against the Atlanta Falcons he didn’t look very good at all in the other two. Maybe it was inexperience or maybe it was something else that led to Cousins throwing more interceptions than touchdowns last season.
But he did nothing in 2013 to lead me to believe that Cousins is better than RGIII and until Griffin just plays so badly in the regular season that Gruden has no choice to play Cousins, I won’t believe it now. I know some analysts like to hate on RGIII and I know some fans prefer Cousins, but Gruden’s best option is to ride it out with RGIII and try to get the offense going behind him.
If it doesn’t work after say half a season and the team isn’t doing well, then you give Kirk Cousins a try. But Gruden knows which quarterback has the biggest upside in his offense and right now that’s RGIII.
