Redskins vs. Browns – Game Preview

Washington Redskins  - 1-0

Cleveland Browns  - 0-1

Redskins vs. Browns.  Both of these teams come into this game with rookie head coaches.  The Washington Redskins Jay Gruden inherits a team one season removed from the playoffs and is looking to return there.  While the Cleveland Browns Mike Pettine inherits a team that’s been to the playoffs only one year out of their last ten and is looking to reverse that trend.

But both teams have a lot to prove.  For the Redskins they need to prove that they can become as good a team passing the football and running it, and gain some consistency on defense and special teams.  The Browns need to prove that they can just win, as they haven’t had a winning season in six years.

However, that might all be changing for the Browns as they begin the Johnny Manziel era.  There’s no guarantee that Manziel can help the Browns organization become a winner but it will be interesting see if he can.  However, first he must win the Browns starting quarterback job.  And his competition Brian Hoyer won’t make it easy.

The Redskins will counter Manziel and Hoyer with quarterback Robert Griffin III.  RGIII is in the beginning stages of learning Jay Gruden’s offense and trying to become a better pocket passer.  And he will have the services of wide receivers Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson for the first time this preseason.

The Browns have talent in the secondary so it will be a good matchup.  The Redskins defense is familiar with what the Browns new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan likes to run having seen him calling plays for the Redskins the previous four years.  And they defend against a mobile QB in RGIII in practice, so that should help them prepare for Manziel’s mobility.

The Redskins DB’s will have their hands full with receiver Josh Gordon and tight end Jordan Cameron.  Defensively the Browns have talent especially with pro bowl cornerback Joe Haden and linebacker Karlos Dansby.  But the Redskins have more depth on both sides of the ball an I predict they win this one even though it’s not a necessity in the preseason.

The objectives are to just get some reps in, let the young guys fight for roster spots, and come out of this thing healthy.  No need for a score prediction.     Redskins vs. Browns
