Can Johnny Manziel work hard and party hard too?

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel is in a fight with Brian Hoyer to become the teams’ starting quarterback.  And after embarrassing the Browns with his hard partying in Las Vegas during the offseason Manziel seems to have made up some of the lead that Hoyer had gotten on him during that time.

Manziel had a solid performance in the Browns first preseason game against the Detroit Lions.  And some feel Manziel out played Hoyer in that game showing good arm strength, accuracy, and his exciting running ability.  But even if Manziel wins the starting quarterback job will he be able to remain focused enough to keep it?

Maybe Johnny Manziel is just so extremely confident in himself that he believes he can afford to go to Las Vegas and party while losing nothing in the process.  But most players in his position trying to win one of 32 coveted starting quarterback jobs in the NFL would be constantly in their play book and working 24/7 to improve their skills.

Manziel is good but is he so good that he can buck the expectations that most young quarterbacks relent to when they become the face of an NFL franchise?  I guess he did pretty well in college doing it.  Winning a Heisman Trophy, becoming a celebrity, and Manziel still got drafted in the first round being a hard partying quarterback.

So maybe he can pull it off because it seems as though he’s really going to try.  Joe Namath did it so maybe Manziel can too.  But as Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III can attest to, you can be settled down as a married man and be a tireless worker, and still struggle as a young quarterback in the NFL.

So unless Manziel is truly committed to being the face of the Cleveland Browns franchise I don’t think he can work hard and party hard and still have great success.  But he’s got people talking about the Browns doesn’t he?    However, ultimately the Browns and Manziel will want people talking more about his exploits on the field than off.
