Redskins rookie camp Report – Spencer Long, right guard- 6-5, 320

The Redskins have a lot competition at the reserve guard spots, and Spencer Long is holding his own against the veterans so far in training camp.  He still will need some time to develop and learn the Redskins scheme, but the other offensive linemen are having to do that as well due to the Redskins installing a new offense this year.

So Long isn’t really at too big of a disadvantage when it comes to that area.  The Redskins obviously like Long, otherwise they wouldn’t have drafted him in the third round.  At 6’5, 320 he has the kind of size that Jay Gruden is looking for at the guard spots.  Spencer Long is also versatile, in that he could play some center as well.

Long has been coming along in training camp, but it will probably be the preseason before the Redskins can see exactly what they have in him and where he fits in the grand scheme of things this season.  Spencer Long is a good bet to make the team, and if he can stay healthy, he might position himself to possibly challenge Chris Chester at right guard as the season goes on.
