Redskins rookie camp Report – Trent Murphy, outside linebacker- 6-5, 250
Trent Murphy is looking as good as can be expected so far early in camp. He’s in a learning phase of the Redskins 3-4 defensive system, he’s a player with a high motor, and good instinctive pass rush skills. And it’s good to have a young and hungry rookie like Murphy on the team, as it shows the veterans that they must be continue to be hungry too.
Trent Murphy is the kind of player who will just come in and work hard and play hard. A lead by example kind of guy, someone who will put some pressure on the veterans above him to have to perform, because Murphy will be coming up fast behind them. Murphy’s presence will only make the position of outside linebacker better, because for one he’s talented and has solid pass rushing skills.
And number two he adds quality depth at the position which is something the Redskins have lacked over the past few seasons. So if an injury occurs, Murphy will be a nice option to turn to if the need arises. Trent Murphy has a good spin move and he’s rugged, but he will need to learn more moves so it’s not so easy for offensive tackles to read what he’s going to do.
But if Murphy keep progressing like he is now, he should make a very good situational pass rusher for the Redskins particularly when they use him, Brian Orakpo, and Ryan Kerrigan at the same time. That will be interesting to see how defense will try to defend it along with Jason Hatcher on the inside.
