We’ve seen elevators become the scene of violent acts for high-profile celebrities and professional athletes. In this case it was Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, and superstar entertainer Jay-Z . And although both men faced similar situations on their fateful elevator rides, only one of the men retaliated with violence while the other did not.
Jay-Z was attacked on his elevator ride by his sister in-law Solange Knowles and while he defended himself, he did not strike back at her. But imagine if he had? Jay-Z might be facing similar circumstances and scrutiny that Ray Rice is. Because Ray Rice not only defended himself, he actually hit his then fiance’, and knocked her out cold.
But if Jay-Z didn’t have his wife Beyoncé and a body guard in the elevator with him, would he still have not hit Solange? I seriously doubt that he would have. I think he would have done the same thing. Because unless your life is in danger in that moment you should only act in a defensive fashion not offensively.
Especially for a professional athlete like Ray Rice who is used to taking on much bigger men than himself, so for him or any man to hit a woman in that situation is wrong. Jay-Z’s incident was embarrassing, but it didn’t go beyond that. However, Ray Rice is lucky that his now wife wasn’t injured beyond what she was, and that he’s not sitting in jail.
So as we see more and more domestic violence incidents popping up with NFL players like Ray Rice and Greg Hardy, I hope that Washington Redskins players can learn from these other players mistakes, and not go down the route of Ray Rice. But instead of trading blows, just walk away.
