Sports Illustrated’s Peter King wrote in his MMQB column that he believes the Washington Redskins will have a new name by 2016. The Redskins name controversy continues as it seems more and more politicians are speaking out against the name. The latest being U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder stating he thinks it’s an offensive name. Also the U.S. Patent Office has canceled the trademark on the Redskins name, saying if disparaging to Native Americans. Maybe all of the political pressure is why King believes the name will be changed by 2016, but I don’t think that it will be changed by then. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has dug in his heels and is determined to continue his fight to keep the name.
I have stated that I don’t think the Redskins use the name as a racial slur, and don’t intentionally try to offend anyone by using the name. However, I do think the name should be changed because it has become too big of a distraction that deflects attention away from the team actually playing football.
But I think Snyder would even fight the league if Roger Goodell and the owners asked him to change it. So will the Redskins have a new nickname by 2016? I guess it’s possible, but I don’t think it’s likely. What do you think?
