Here is a list counting down the Top 32 Washington Redskins of 2014 – No. 7
7. Jason Hatcher – defensive end
Age 32, 6-6, 299 pounds
Analysis: The Washington Redskins got very little pass rush from their defensive line last season. The entire line combined for just 5.5 sacks on the season, so this was an area that the team had to make a concerted effort to try to improve. Enter free agent signee Jason Hatcher, who led the Dallas Cowboys in sacks last season with 11.The Redskins saw up close and personal how effective Hatcher can be as he had a dominant performance against the Redskins in week 6 last season with two sacks, and even more hits on quarterback Robert Griffin III. Hatcher’s performance last season led to him be selected to the pro bowl, however the Cowboys didn’t try hard to re-sign Hatcher.
For on thing he’s on the wrong side of 30, and the 11 sack season came in a contract year, so there’s no guarantee that Hatcher can duplicate what he did in 2013. However, it’s possible that Hatcher may be having a late career surge. It happens sometimes to players when the light finally comes on for them after they pass 30. This may be the case with Hatcher.
As the Redskins really need him to come in and generate a pass rush at defensive end in their 3-4 defense. They don’t need 11 sacks necessarily, but they need him to draw attention away from the outside linebackers and be a force up front that has to be accounted for.
Jason Hatcher recently had arthroscopic knee surgery and he may or may not be ready for training camp. But we will have to wait for the regular season to see if it impacts his performance at all.
