Redskins Bubble Report – A look at Redskins players who are on the bubble of making the team or getting cut.
Stephen Bowen - defensive end
Washington Redskins defensive end Stephen Bowen had a rough 2013 season. He struggled for much of the season with an injury to his right knee, and that may have significantly contributed to the down year as he tried to play with the injury. Bowen tore his right PCL which caused him to miss six games last season. And now he’s in position where he may need a great camp and preseason to make the team. Why he might get Cut? Although Bowen did play through an injury, he still didn’t register one sack in 10 games. When Bowen debuted with the Redskins in 2011 he had 6 sacks that year, but he only has 1 sack combined for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. While Bowen was out injured Chris Baker stepped into his spot, and played well down the stretch, and he may have the inside track to start opposite Jason Hatcher at defensive end. So Bowen may be the odd man out.
Why he might make the Team? If Stephen Bowen can come into training camp healthy then it’s possible that he might be able to find his form from 2011. Also, Jason Hatcher recently had arthroscopic knee surgery, so the Redskins may be keen to hold on to Bowen should Hatcher continue to have more trouble with his knee leading up to the regular season.
Conclusion: Bowen’s $7 million cap hit suggests that he’s much too expensive to be a backup, so he will be very motivated to try to reclaim his starting position from Baker. However, it’s possible that the Redskins might keep him regardless, but if less expensive options are equally as impressive during training camp then Bowen will become expendable.
