Here is a list counting down the Top 32 Washington Redskins of 2014 – No. 17

17.  Shawn Lauvao - left guard

Age 26, 6-3, 315 pounds

Analysis: One of the major things that new Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said he wanted do when he was hired was to bring in bigger offensive linemen.  At times last season the Redskins interior line had trouble in pass protection against bigger defensive linemen, and this was identified as an area to try to upgrade.

So the Redskins targeted free agent guard Shawn Lauvao early in the process and got their man.  The signing of Lauvao does give the Redskins a bigger lineman at left guard than they had last year.  As Kory Lichtensteiger moves from left guard to center.  This should enable the Redskins do more power running on the left side as Lauvao teams up with left tackle Trent Williams.

Lauvao is a size upgrade, however he’s still agile enough to be effective in the Redskins zone blocking scheme, which Jay Gruden has pledged to continue using this season.  Gruden is very familiar with Lauvao from his time as the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator, and being able to see him up close twice a year as Lauvao was a three year starter with the Cleveland Browns.

20.  Tyler Polumbus

19.  Darrel Young

18.  Ryan Clark
