The Washington Redskins have selected Stanford outside Linebacker Trent Murphy at pick number 47 of the second round. The Redskins had their choice of a number of highly rated prospects many of whom had first round grades. But they decided to go with an outside linebacker, and Trent Murphy was rated at second round at the position on the board.
Here’s my pre-draft evaluation:
Trent Murphy has good size at 6’5, 250 and he has good pass rushing ability. He played more of a hybrid role at Stanford, as he went from having his hand down on the ground as a defensive end, and also would play standing up as an outside linebacker. He has long arms and can disrupt passing lanes.
Although he is good at rushing the passer, he has some work to do in coverage. He’s not a fluid athlete, and will need to work on his coverage skills. Also Murphy is more lanky and lean with his build, and will need to bulk up some in order to compete against the bigger offensive tackles in the NFL.
I’ll have more analysis on the Redskins selection of Trent Murphy shortly.
