Redskins draft guard Spencer Long at pick 78

The Washington Redskins have selected Nebraska offensive guard Spencer Long at pick number 78 of the third round.  This pick comes as the result of a trade the Redskins made with the Dallas Cowboys.  The Cowboys moved up to the Redskins pick at number 34, and the Redskins received the Cowboys number 47 and 78 pick in the third round.

The Redskins and head coach Jay Gruden have specified the desire to add more size to the offensive line and Long at 6’4, 320 certainly helps add size to the line.  The Redskins have made the offensive line a priority in this draft with the additions of offensive tackle Morgan Moses at pick number 66 and now Spencer Long at pick number 78.

I think he can start. I would have liked Nix from ND or Brooks from FSU more. Bowen, Cofield, and Hatcher are getting up there in age and Jarvis hasn’t been the same since the injury. I think our secondary was left out exposed due to lack of pressure. We need a young stud to develop in that position.

He might end up being a starter. The only problem is the Redskins lost a lot of value on this pick, as Long was rated as a late round prospect. They could have gotten him much later. That’s why I don’t like this pick. But we’ll see how it turns out.

I didn’t see this pick coming. I think we could have done better by concentrating on the defense. I guess Josh L isn’t working out and they don’t have confidence in our guards.

It would seem they don’t like guards they have. And I thought they would take a guard, but someone rated much higher. It could turn out that Long becomes a great player for the Redskins, but they surely could have gotten in the fourth or fifth round.

I like the targeted position, but I think this was a big reach. I rated Gabe Jackson and Trai Turner higher and they were not out half of their senior seasons with knee injuries. I just would not draft a guy off an injury this high. Martavis Bryant, an incredible talent and red zone target was still on the board. I was also bummed we just missed on Chris Borland and Travis Swanson in the previous two picks.

I agree. Any one of those picks would have been better than Long. Not saying they are better player, because that has yet to be determined, but better picks in terms of value, most definitely.
