Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly recently stated that the team’s release of wide receiver DeSean Jackson was for football reasons. He stated that the team just wanted to go in a different direction. But is that really the case, or is Chip Kelly just spinning out some coach speak and not addressing the real reasons?
I think it’s the latter. But then again “football reasons” could mean a lot of different things. However, I think in this case, it certainly couldn’t mean on the field production. As DeSean Jackson was the Eagle’s top receiver last season, and has been ever since he was drafted by the team in 2008.
Or was Chip Kelly referring to some other football reason? Kelly has denied that he and Jackson did not get along, but it’s been rumored that there was friction between the two, and insists the release was to go in a different direction at receiver. The Eagles initially tried to trade Jackson, but they apparently got no offers for him.
But regardless of what the real reason was, the release had to be an eye-opening experience for DeSean Jackson, and his conduct as a Washington Redskin will be monitored closely. His new teammates have embraced him, and head coach Jay Gruden has said positive things about Jackson as well.
So we’ll have to see just how those “football reasons” end up playing out positively or negatively for both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins on the football field come Week 3.
