It’s been reported that Seattle Seahawks free agent cornerback Brandon Browner is visiting the Washington Redskins on Thursday night. But after recently signing free agent cornerback Tracy Porter, and also re-signing starter DeAngelo Hall, are the Redskins really trying to sign another free agent cornerback? Or is Browner being looked at as a safety?
The Redskins still need to sign a safety, as they still have gaping hole at that position right now. Last season’s starters at safety Brandon Meriweather and Reed Doughty are both free agents. And there a re question marks surrounding rookies Bacarri Rambo and Phillip Thomas. Rambo was inconsistent last year, and Thomas was injured.
Browner has unbelievable size for a cornerback at 6’4, 221. But while he definitely has the size to play safety, does his game translate to it? Browner is not a shy tackler, and doesn’t hesitate to lay the wood on a ball carrier. And the fact that he’s agile enough to play corner at his size suggests he could indeed play safety.
However, the NFL has suspended Brandon Browner for the first four weeks of the 2014 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. So if the Redskins signed him, they would have to do without his services for a full month into the season. Browner has already visited the New England Patriots, and the Jets and Saint also have interest.
