ESPNRadio980’s Chris Russell is reporting that the Redskins have resigned free agent linebacker Perry Riley to a multi-yea deal. Riley would have been an unrestricted free agent, but the Redskins have re-signed him before another team could beat them to the punch.
It would have been a huge blow for the Redskins to have lost Riley, as their other starter at inside linebacker, London Fletcher announced his retirement last season. Having to replace both starters would have been a big set back for the Redskins and now Riley gives them an experienced veteran to build with.
Riley has been solid the past few seasons for the Redskins and at age 25, he may have his best football ahead of him. He’s had over 100 tackles and over 3 sacks each of the past few seasons. He struggled at time against the run and in pass coverage last season, but the lack of a pass rush from the defensive line didn’t help with that.
The Redskins have brought back two of the best players on defense in Riley and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo. Choosing to keep and reward their own young players with lucrative contracts as opposed to signing other teams free agents. It will be interesting to see what other moves they make defensively.
