You see it every year around this time. Teams leaking out word to the media that they don’t like this player or they don’t like player. Or they don’t dislike a certain player, they just like another player more. you’re seeing that happen this year with quarterback prospect Johnny Manziel, as reports are coming out that he’s sliding down draft boards.
I had my concerns about Johnny Manziel last year, when it appeared as though he was too immature to enter the NFL draft. The autograph signing scandal, his antics in the first game of the season against Rice, and other things made me believe he was not mature enough to enter the draft.
However, he appeared to get his act together throughout the season, and by the end he seemed to understand that unless he showed some maturity, it would hurt his draft stock. And some teams still might hold those things against him. But with so many teams in at the top of the draft in need of a quarterback, I can’t see how Manziel could fall that far.
And yet there have been reports that the Oakland Raider and the Cleveland Browns like Fresno State’s Derek Carr better than Manziel. And while Carr is good prospect, and make a fine NFL quarterback, I find it hard to believe that if Johnny Manziel is on the board when those teams pick that Carr will be chosen first.
I think it’s all just a smoke screen. Talk down the guy you want, and talk up the guy you don’t want. The Redskins already have a starting quarterback in Robert Griffin III, so Manziel isn’t in the cards for them. But even though he’s short, and may like to party too much, I can’t see quarterback needy teams leaving Manziel on the board when the time comes.
