Dallas Cowboys - 7-7
Washington Redskins - 3-11
Cowboys vs. Redskins. These two teams know each other very well. Their NFC East battles make for one of the fiercest rivalries in the league. Last season the winner of this game ended up winning the division, and this season it’s a must win for the Cowboys, with huge implications on the future for head coach Jason Garrett and his quarterback Tony Romo.
For the Redskins there’s no playoff berth at stake. The only things to be determined are possible spots on next season’s roster and for quarterback Kirk Cousins, showcasing his talents for possibly a spot as a starter on another roster. But unlike Jason Garrett, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan’s fate may already be sealed regardless of what happens in this game.
It was announced that Redskins inside linebacker London Fletcher is 99% certain that he will retire at the end of the season. So I’m sure he will be motivated to go out with a win in his last game in front of Redskins fans. The emotion surrounding this should also fire up Fletcher’s teammates, as he’s been the unquestioned leader of the team during his seven seasons.
But the Cowboys will be highly motivated as well, because a loss will all but destroy their hopes of going to the playoffs, and they will want to try to erase from their memory the embarrassing collapse and loss last week to the Green Bay Packers. However, the Cowboys struggling defense will be challenged by Cousins, who impressed last week in the loss to the Falcons.
And in the end it will be motivation that will determine the winner of this game. Is the Cowboys motivation to stay in the playoff hunt enough to overcome the Redskins motivation to send Fletcher out a winner? I think the Cowboys motivation wins out. The Cowboys defense is bad, but they should have enough offense to overcome Cousins and the Redskins. It will be close but the Cowboys win. Cowboys vs. Redskins.
