What is Mike Shanahan trying to Prove?

It seems as though Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan wants to be fired so badly, that he will risk what’s left of his reputation to do it.  His benching of quarterback Robert Griffin III is devoid of logic, and it appears as though it’s a desperate move by Shanahan to force the hand of owner Daniel Snyder to fire him.  What else could it be?

At this point Shanahan knows he won’t be back next season, so instead of going out quietly and respectfully, he wants to go out with a bang and in defiance of his owner.  It’s been alleged that Shanahan himself is the source of the leaks regarding Snyder’s relationship with RGIII.  So does Shanahan really believe that such tactics will endear him to other NFL owners?

It’s rumored that Shanahan wants to be fired to pursue the Houston Texans head coaching job, but why would anyone want to hire him now?  Maybe Shanahan knows something the rest of us don’t, or maybe the man is simply losing it?  But either way, I’ve never seen a situation as volatile and dysfunctional as this one.

Is this situation really the aftermath of a head coach being upset over an owner and a star player’s relationship, or is there something else going on?  At this time Mike Shanahan won’t talk about it.  But at some point he’s going to have to explain his actions, and whether or not he did want to quit last season.

If Shanahan did want to quit and decided to coach the team any way to keep from being viewed negatively by the media, then logic suggests his heart was never into this season to begin with.  And maybe what we’re seeing now is simply his ultimate end game.  But is Snyder and RGIII’s relationship worth all this?  I think Shanahan is going to wish he’d quit when he had the chance.
