Kirk Cousins - What can Realistically be Expected?

Now that Mike Shanahan has shut down Robert Griffin III for the season, Kirk Cousins is now the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins for the remainder of the season.  But at 3-10 the Redskins were not a very good team, even with RGIII in the lineup.  So what should the expectation be for Cousins as the starter?

Some fans seem to think that Cousins is the answer to the Redskins being a winning team.  But I think some of that sentiment is just a negative reaction to being turned off by Robert Griffin III.  I mean what else could it be really?  In the times Cousins has played so far this season, he hasn’t looked very good at all.  Cousins has a 48% completion percentage and a 26.6 QB rating.

In 2012 Cousins played well in relief of RGIII.  But given what we know about the team in terms of its defense and special teams, can inserting Cousins just automatically turn a bad team into a good one overnight?  I don’t think so.  I think Cousins will do everything in his power to play well, but he’s only started one game in his career, and the Redskins were a better team then.

If Mike Shanahan thinks Griffin’s safety would be at risk, why should it be any different for Cousins?  Cousins has mobility, but not on the level of RGIII.  So is pass protection supposed to improve overnight?  Is the Redskins defense suddenly going to become a world beater simply because Cousins is at QB?  I doubt it.  But we’ll see.

With everything that’s going on between Shanahan and Dan Snyder, the fact that Shanahan is going to be fired, and that Griffin supposedly was not benched for his performance, but for safety.  There seems to be too much going on for Cousins to simply light it up as the starter.  He’ll just have to make the most of a bad situation.

I think Cousin will perform as well as can be expected.  I think he’ll have some good moments and some bad moments.  However, I don’t think he’ll be the world beater than some might want him to be.  Let’s face it, there’s going to be some division on the team as before, and in order for Cousins to excel the whole team needs to be on the same page.  But the Redskins aren’t even on the same chapter.
