Kansas City Chiefs - 9-3
Washington Redskins – 3-9
Chiefs vs. Redskins. Both of these teams come into this game on losing streaks. The Chiefs have a three game losing streak and the Redskins are on a four game losing streak. The Chiefs started the season at 9-0, and appeared to be cruising along until they ran into some tough AFC West competition, namely the Denver Broncos. While the Redskins just can’t seem to get in sync.
One half they look really good and then the next they look terrible. They’ve had problems protecting the quarterback and Running back Alfred Morris hasn’t been able to get going the past few games. The Chiefs has been moving the ball well, as they’ve put points on the board and passed the ball successfully. However, it’s their vaunted defense that has struggled lately.
Their feared pass rusher Justin Houston has been injured, and his counterpart at OLB Tamba Hali has struggled with injuries too. So the Chiefs have only been able to generate 1 sack over the past three games, and opposing QB’s have taken advantage. But where the Chiefs outside linebackers have struggled, the Redskins Brian Orakpo has been dominant.
Orakpo has 5.5 sacks over the past four games and with the Chiefs LT Brandon Albert likely not to play, Orakpo may be in line for another big game. And the Redskins will need it, as Chiefs QB Alex Smith has played well the past three games, and their star running back Jamaal Charles is capable of hurting the Redskins defense in a number of ways.
But what about the Redskins offense? Teams have focused on shutting down running back Alfred Morris, and quarterback Robert Griffin III has looked good in moments, but mostly the Redskins offense has been stagnant. I think the Redskins have a good chance to beat the Chiefs, especially with their injuries. But I don’t think they will.
Just like last week this game will come down to team chemistry and belief. When the game is on the line, those things are needed to dig deep and fight to win. The Chiefs still have a playoff berth to secure, so hope remains for them. But the Redskins are eliminated from the playoffs, and with head coach Mike Shanahan on the Hot Seat, the Redskins may be ready to turn the page.
So unless the Chiefs just give the game away with a bunch of turnovers, they’ll win. Chiefs vs. Redskins.
