If Mike Shanahan had drafted Tannehill, he'd still be on the Hot Seat

It’s being reported that a source informed ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith that Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan wanted to stay at the number six pick and draft QB Ryan Tannehill, rather than move up to draft Robert Griffin III.  Let’s say this report is true, What difference does it make now?

Honestly, why wouldn’t Shanahan have considered drafting Tannehill?  He was a good prospect.  I think most Redskins fans and analysts were looking at Ryan Tannehill as well, because it appeared as though the top two QB’s in the 2012 draft, Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck were out of reach.

The Redskins had the sixth pick in that draft, and Tannehill would have been on the board.  So obviously this was a consideration for the Redskins, However, they decided to trade up for RGIII.  But is this report asserting that Shanahan was forced into drafting Robert Griffin III against his better judgment?

Remember this is a man who was fleeced into trading a second and third round pick for a washed up Donovan McNabb.  So now we’re supposed to believe that his prevailing wisdom was to not trade up for RGIII?  But even if Shanahan was forced into drafting RGIII, what does that say about him as the man running the team?

And even if Shanahan had stayed at the number six pick and drafted Ryan Tannehill, is anyone suggesting that the Redskins would be one of the top teams in the league right now?  Sure, Tannehill is looking like a good up and coming quarterback, but no one knows if he’ll become one of the top guys.

All this report is, is just the media throwing fuel onto the hot story of the moment.  Anything surrounding RGIII is a headline, and everybody knows it.  So lets report on what some anonymous source has to say, without anyone being able to confirm or deny the report.  Once again it’s much ado about nothing.

But I’ll say this, replace RGIII in the lineup last season with Ryan Tannehill and the Redskins don’t win the NFC East.  Can Ryan Tannehill block for himself?  How would Ryan Tannehill improve the Redskins special teams?  How would Ryan Tannehill improve the Redskins defense?

Even with Tannehill and those extra draft picks back, Mike Shanahan would still be sitting on the hot seat.  So this changes nothing.  Maybe if Mike Shanahan had used better judgment and taken RGIII out of the game in the playoffs last season, instead of letting him tear up his knee, he wouldn’t be in this situation right now.
