Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams is having another all-pro caliber season. He’s been the best offensive lineman for the Redskins and he enables the Redskins to do much more on offense based on his presence. But in the aftermath of the Redskins loss to the Philadelphia Eagles it seems losing wasn’t the thing foremost on Williams mind.
Williams alleges that the umpire of the game Roy Ellison called him a “garbage ass, disrespectful M-F”. And while it’s unusual to hear about this type of language coming from an official, I question why this is headline news for the Redskins? Given the state of the team and how the season is unfolding, shouldn’t the Redskins be worried about bigger things?
I mean, this is the NFL we’re talking about here. I would wager the number of curse words uttered on the field during a given week of NFL games couldn’t even be counted. And I don’t condone an official using that type of language primarily because they need to give the appearance of impartiality.
So an official losing his cool like this is troubling. However, I think there is a better way to handle a complaint like this than doing it through the media. Because this comes off as Trent Williams is more upset about being cursed out by an official than he is about losing the game. Now given the type of competitor Trent Williams is I doubt that’s the case, but it appears like it is.
So instead of complaining in the media, the complaint should be made discreetly through the NFL league offices. And handling it that way keeps the focused on winning games, and off of more distractions. because otherwise, I think the Redskins have more to worry about right now, than what a referee says in a heated moment in a game.
