Special Teams grades for the Redskins victory over the Oakland Raiders.

Return Teams:  The Redskins had no kickoff returns, and they only had two punt returns.  Returner Chris Thompson did a good job fielding the punts, but could only manage 5.5 yards a return.  Thompson has yet to break a big return, but I get the feeling one is coming.  But one break down occurred when the raiders converted a first down on a fake punt.  The punt return team was clearly caught off guard.  Return Team grade – C+

Coverage teams:  The coverage teams didn’t give up any long returns on punt and kickoffs, and did a good job of keeping the dangerous Jacoby Ford in check.  However, a blocked Sav Rocca punt in the first quarter which was recovered for a touchdown.  This should happen at this level.  Coverage team grade – F

Kicker: John Potter converted a chip shot 25 yard field goal, but was otherwise untested from a greater distance.  However, the Raiders were able to return two kickoffs for decent yardage, so the length of his kicks need to improve.   Kicker grade – B

Punter:  Other than the inexcusable blocked Punt which I think Sav Rocca could have gotten off quicker, Rocca had a good game punting the football.  Punter grade:  C+

Total Special Teams grade:  C-   The special teams grade is mostly affected by the blocked punt, and they are lucky that wasn’t the play that decided the game.
