The 2012 season had a different kind of anticipation surrounding it. Rather than blindfolded hope, there was actual reason to be optimistic. Now four weeks into the season, it is evident that the reason for optimism is completely justified. With the addition of Robert Griffin III, it has turned the tides for this franchise that has been victimized for the entire century. Right now, sitting here, a perfectly valid argument could be given that the Redskins could be 4-0.
Game after game Griffin continues to satisfy (to say the least) the organization and its fans, clearly showing why it was the right decision by the executives to move up to the number 2 spot in the draft for him. Last week RG3 showed why no moment or challenge is too large of an obstacle. With 1:42 left in the 4th quarter and trailing 22-21 to the Buccaneers, Griffin master pieced a 66 yard drive that set up a game winning Billy Cundiff field goal. His stats for the game as whole included 26-35 for 324 yards with a 102.4 quarterback rating. Nothing that indicates he is just a rookie in the NFL.
Griffin afterwards described his first game winning drive in the NFL with the word fun. And fun can maybe be the word to define the team this year. Being a Redskin has been a frustrating time for quite a while, but with the strides that continue to be made and the competitiveness the team has showed, it can be said without question that this brand of football being played is fun. For the fans especially, the new dimension that RG3 adds, which includes running, passing, and the intelligence of a seasoned veteran, makes for real reason to expect greater things as the season progresses.
Coming up the Redskins will face the Atlanta Falcons and their similar yet more enhanced high-octane attack. The Falcons are arguably one of the best teams in the league right now so this will be the perfect type of test for the Redskins to see where they are as a team, and to solidify that we are not overreacting as viewers. But to mention again, with this team this year, it is not about hoping for a good performance. Right now the team has showed reason to be optimistic and to feel like there is a real fighting chance to win week after week. RG3 is the reason for that, and if his leadership and play can ignite the whole team to play at levels they never knew they were capable of, perfect. The defense still remains a question, but as long as RG3 is leading their offense, the Redskins brand of football will continue to be fun to watch.
