Rexy Returns

That’s right folks, the Redskins have agreed on a 1 year deal with quarterback Rex Grossman. This is the third consecutive offseason in which Grossman has signed a 1 year contract. Grossman had been offered a multi-year deal last offseason by the team, but had declined. Like many others who also had to endure watching the human turnover machine go to work every sunday last season, my first reaction to this news was also, “Really?” But when you take a moment to think about it, the signing actually makes sense for both parties. Grossman would not have been offered a multi year deal to start anywhere else in the league, and the Redskins still needed to have a veteran QB on the roster to sit behind the rookie, which we all presume will be Robert Griffin III. There had been rumors of the team’s interest in a veteran like Kyle Orton or another QB to bring in, but I guess the team felt more comfortable in bringing back Rex because he already knows the system. Although his play is often erratic and his ball security issues are well known, Grossman does know Kyle Shanahan’s system like the back of his hand going back to their season in Houston, and could be of help to a young signal caller in team meetings and on the practice field. Who knows, he could even be the starter in week 1 if the team feels that RGIII isn’t ready yet. Yikes!
