Scouting the enemy: Redskins at Cowboys

The continuation of my chat with Steve from the Landry Hat:

What is your take on the Cowboy’s injury situation?  Should Cowboy fans be concerned?
I’m surprised. I figured there would be injury ramifications after the NFL lockout left players with a shorten off-season to prepare physically…but this is ridiculous. The season just started and it seems that half of our starters are already injured. The bye-week can not get here soon enough for the Dallas Cowboys (Week 5). It’s getting so bad that Head Coach Jason Garrett gave all the players an extra day off this week just to rest.

Why has the running game not taken off?  Is the RB position not as deep as many had expected it to be in the preseason?

There are many reasons, but the biggest is our young and inexperienced offensive line. We are deep at the RB position but they just don’t have any holes to run through. And they are not the kind of running backs that can “make plays” out of nothing. (see Barry Sanders) Dallas did bring in an experienced fullback, Tony Fiammetta, to help in that area. And as the O-line gets more experience, the running game should get back on track. I just hope it’s not too late.

Can the Cowboys go through an entire season with a better than excellent front seven on defense but less than impressive secondary?

Yes. And the answer is two words: Rob Ryan. Defensive Coordinator Ryan’s scheme has brought an attacking style to our defense that focuses pressure on the quarterback and relieves the pressure on the defensive backfield. It’s still a work in progress, but they’ll soon get the kinks worked out.

Do the Cowboys have enough talent on the depth chart to take them beyond expectations this season?

Talent, yes. I think we can all agree that on paper Dallas should be in the playoff hunt. But reality is different. We have a first year head coach. We have a new defensive coordinator trying to teach a new defensive scheme. And let’s not forget, this team has yet to prove themselves in the post-season. The talent may be there, but “potential” alone doesn’t win playoff games or championships.

What are the Cowboys keys to victory this Monday?
Our defense has to get pressure on Rex Grossman early. We can not allow him to get comfortable in the pocket. We need to rattle Grossman into making mistakes. On offense, we need our running game to be more effective. With Miles Austin out, Dez Bryant questionable and Tony Romo playing hurt, our passing game is going to need some major help. We also need to get Jason Witten involved early and often.
