Clinton Portis; the ego strikes back

Or should it be titled Clinton Portis; A New Hope.  Anyhow, enough with Star Wars references. Someone forgot to mention to former Redskins running back Clinton Portis that the New York Giants managed to rid themselves of one piece of baggage -wide receiver Plaxico Burress- and probably would rather not have an even heavier piece of baggage on their sidelines.  To be fair though, Burress was still a competent and viable receiver when he left the Giants due to his, ahem, incarceration for concealed weapons charges in New York.  Portis, on the other hand, was let go by the Redskins because of numerous injuries that had diminished his effectiveness as a starting running back.  In addition to injuries, Portis also suffered big-mouth syndrome, letting his ego and attitude prohibit him from garnering the respect he might otherwise have enjoyed from fans and teammates alike.

Says Portis, as reported by www.cnnsi.com,

To go to the Giants and get to play the Redskins twice a year after them feeling I wasn’t capable any more, I think that would be outstanding.

Yes Clinton, it would be outstanding except for the fact that you aren’t indeed capable anymore and haven’t been for the past few years.  My memories of you will be relegated to visions of you standing on the sidelines sucking down oxygen after one or two short runs.  Furthermore, cnnsi.com reported that sources claim Portis isn’t very high on the Giants’ essentials list.  It is more likely that Plaxico will be wearing a Redskins uniform before Portis wears a Giants uniform, which I still think is a very long shot.  I still have to give Portis some credit though.  He is being more positive than he ever was as a Redskin.
